2012 Dragon Boat Festival

Great White North (GWN)  coordinated the first event of the 2010 MLDB Series, making it's debut in Madisonville, Louisiana, along the Tchefuncte River. This year, the Greater New Orleans International Dragon Boat Festival will be held on Saturday May 12 2012.

According to GWN, this is the world's fastest growing water sport is also the most exciting. Twenty paddlers move in unison, combining strength with teamwork in a boat whose elaborate design originates in ancient China.

It's all About Teamwork!

The Crew:
A maximum of 20 paddlers, with a steersperson (cox) and a drummer. Teams entering the Great White North Dragon Boat Challenge must have a mixed crew with a minimum of 8 female paddlers in the boat.

The Challenge:
Dragon Boat Racing is a great sport for men and women of all ages and abilities. Anyone can do it and have fun!

The Scoop:
Teamwork is everything in Dragon Boat Racing. Synchronicity is more important than strength. A perfectly synchronized team will almost always beat a stronger, but less coordinated team.

Make plans to join us for this fun event next year

Registration fees include entry into the event, two practice sessions with a GWN certified coach and a 10x10 team tent.

GWN provides the use of paddles, lifejackets and of course, the boats to race in.  Practices will run approx. during the 1-2 week(s) leading up to the event depending on the number of practice requests.  More info about booking practices will be sent once you’ve registered.  As mentioned above, we provide a coach for your practices, along with a steersperson on the event day.  You only need to worry about recruiting paddlers and your drummer.

We will also have a great festival on-land with a beer garden, vendors/exhibitors, food marketplace and a kids area, so bring your family and friends to enjoy the day and to cheer you on.

Team composition:

Minimum of 12 paddlers to a maximum of 20 paddlers, 1 drummer and 4 alternates
(paddlers).

This is the typical breakdown of a team, however, depending on how many you have that are interested we can work around it.

Mixed team: If you have 20 paddlers in the boat, there is a minimum requirement of 8 women (of course, you can have more).  The ratio moves along if you have less in the boat, i.e. 18 paddlers – 7 have to be female (11 males); 16 paddlers – 6 female (10 male).

Open team: Any combination of paddlers (May be all one gender)

These are typically all men’s teams and are formed by joining the men from 2-3 existing mixed teams, which is why the price is so low. It’s an extra race for the men (only 2 races, semis and finals).  Most have a female drummer to help lighten the boat.  So the competition is definitely tougher in this category.

Women’s team: all paddlers and the drummer must be female.
